Description of the facility
MIVEGEC is a leading research team in the field of entomology and infectious diseases including virus, bacteria and parasites. It is located at Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, Montpellier (France). It provides fully equipped secure CL1, CL2 and CL3 insectaries and laboratories suitable to study sand fly vectorial competence, Leishmania infection, development and interaction with the host and the vector, behavioral assays and species identification.
The collection of arthropods of medical interest (Arim) is housed in Montpellier (France) and offers the public more than 3000 species of various groups of vectors and pests (mosquitoes, sand flies, lice, fleas, ticks, bedbugs, mites…). The Arim collection includes many specimens from Europe, Asia, Oceania, North and South America (92 countries listed in our database). Even if, Culicidian species are largely dominant, in particular the known Anophelinae species, the collection hosts nearly 400000 specimens, offering 300 holotypes of various taxonomic groups.
A room fully equipped is dedicated to insect identification.
Course overview
A personalized (1-4 persons) 5-day theoretical and laboratory-based course will provide the necessary background for sand fly dissection, mounting and identification. The training will consist of theoretical modules on biology and ecology of the studied arthropods and practical modules on sand fly dissection, mounting and identification.
Equipment used
Trainees will use the following equipment:
- Chemical safety cabinets,
- Stereomicroscope and microscope,
- Access to the collection for identification training,
- All products necessary for the different types of mounting
