Description
Material provided: Personalized training for end-users
Unit definition: 2 days of training
Biosafety Level: CL1
Installation name: WU insectary, Wageningen University (WU), Wageningen, Netherlands
Website: WU BSL1 lab
Description of the facility
The CL1 facilities at WU offer the opportunity to perform behavioural experiments with blood-feeding insects. Enclosures for behavioural and ecological studies on disease vectors can support work done in the CL3, and comprise several olfactometers, a free-flight cage, and a flight image analyser for recording of flying insects, including the software programme to translate the flights into 3D images. EAG and single sensillum recording systems and software to study the olfactory response of vectors are present.
Depending on availability of the experimental set-up, training on EAG can be offered on specific request.
Available vectors
The training sessions will make use of the insectaries at WU, which currently supply several lines of Culex pipiens (biotypes pipiens and molestus), Anopheles coluzzii, and Aedes aegypti.
Course overview
A personalized (1-4 persons) 2-day laboratory-based course will provide a necessary background to learn methods for behaviour experiments. The training will include:
- Mosquito rearing procedures, including artificial feeding methods
- The use of olfactometer and windtunnel set-ups in behavioral research
- Basics of 3-D reconstruction of insect flight
- Development of surveillance tools exploiting host-seeking behaviour
